Accepted | Sheridan Animation 2017 Portfolio

Update March 30 2017: The scoresheet arrived in the mail! I didn't do so well in perspective and structure with lifedrawing, but all the more room to improve! It still feels pretty surreal to me and my excitement still hasn't died down. I also might be going to the Open House on April 22nd so if you wanna meet up feel free to message me on my facebook!

Update March 28 2017: I got accepted ahhh!!!! I checked my Student Center right after school on Monday and the conditional offer was just staring back at me... All I gotta do is graduate highschool since I have all mandatory classes completed!

I am now waiting for my score sheet to be mailed and once that arrives I'll scan and post it here as another update. Thank you all for looking at my work and supporting me throughout this process! I can't wait to meet everyone with such similar interests next year ♥

---

Hello! I wanted to upload my portfolio on here for mostly personal documentation, but I know some people may want to see how I went about it! As most of you know, a lot of the requirements changed from last year and we were pretty confused with some of the instructions... but here I'll show you how I tackled it.

Leggo!

A simple table of contents to present my work, I decided to add a little caricature of my cat Potato and I!

LIFEDRAWING
           Observational Life Drawing

Long Pose A

Long Pose B

Short Pose A

Short Pose B

I scanned the newsprint and slipped the originals behind them. I started lifedrawing only this summer but wish I had started even sooner. It's so stressful looking through piles and piles of newsprints to find only a few good ones... then panic sets in. So! start your lifedrawing ASAP please! I also made sure to choose fairly different poses for all four.

           Hand Drawings

Hand Drawing A

I decided for all of my drawings that I would be doing construction in blue and go over it with a 2B pencil! The only problem is that it looks so light in photos it's hard to see the shapes I used, sorry about that. The idea of throwing a mouse has a long story behind it, but I thought it would be a little bit funny. Can't forget safety first! A helmet is a must.

Hand Drawing B

nyoOOOoom!
Also, the only one regret I have for the labeling system here is that I didn't put it in landscape to match the paper. Mainly it was because of the portfolio width but hopefully that didn't impact any scores since presentation isn't on the scoresheet this year.

ANIMATION AND CHARACTER DESIGN
           Character Rotation

 Front View

This is Sugar! I've changed her design quite a bit throughout the year, and even more so for portfolio. My biggest inspiration was Anna Cattish during the phase of developing my cartoon style and it helped immensely by doing studies. Thus, Sugar was born!

 3/4 Front

 Profile View

 3/4 Back

I think the biggest challenge about this was making everything line up... please invest in a lightbox/table! Not only will it help with character, it basically helps with every section here. (Also cleanup was a pain.. and took forever)

Lineup

This was optional but I think it's smart to include it! It lets the profs quickly see if everything lines up.

           Action Poses

 Seeing litter

I decided to go with a more humorous approach once again, but this time with a banana peel! This gave me a greater chance to be more expressive. This also took a lot of planning and redrawing. Clean up was fairly easy though since your line quality can stay a little looser than usual. (Equivalent to short pose life drawing quality)

 Picking up litter

Tossing litter into a garbage can

Revenge on Banana! D:^<

           Expression Sheet

 Top: Neutral
Left: Embarrassed | Right: Sour

This was pretty tricky! These expressions were not easy... I can still remember the haunting stock images of people eating lemons. :^* I used squash and stretch to my advantage here!

           Storyboard

 Panels

The character had to interact with a toy this year, thus I chose a unicorn kiddy ride. Yoni's face was pretty difficult to get down but with lots of copying and redrawing, eventually I got the hang of it!

 LAYOUT
           Household Objects
 Before Earthquake

After looking at this, it does seem kind of empty. If I had more time, I would have probably added a table cloth or something! An easter egg is that there is a tomato and a potato... which are the names of my cats as well :3c

After Earthquake

I tried to maintain a pleasing composition in both, but it was pretty challenging considering all the mess happening here... But to make certain objects stand out, use line weight to your advantage!

           Room Line Drawing
 Observational (Normal)

I actually referenced my friend's kitchen since my own is really empty and doesn't have a naturally appealing composition. Layout was definitely our of my comfort zone but after spending so much time on it, I can say that I have gained a new skill.

Fantasy

For part B you had to turn it into a fantasy version. The instructions were pretty vague and a little bit confusing, so I decided to stay safe and just maintain the same angle and perspective. If you can't tell, this turned into a witch's kitchen! She's actually an OC of mine named Spice. Sugar may or may not have an interesting relationship with her... :^)

PERSONAL ARTWORK
           Concept Art

This was part of my highschool Co-op position! These are only a few character/prop concepts I have created for them. I labeled these (and the upcoming) works as part A and B so they counted as one!

           Digital Paintings

There's nothing really much to say about these... they're just pretty simple portraits that show how my understanding of color!

           Gouache Studies

I originally wanted to do gouache landscape studies but I was rushed... plus it was a slushy winter so the scenery wasn't exactly very pleasing. Though I did include some in my sketchbook! These colors also look really faded out on camera due to the glare so I apologize.

           Statue Rotation Animation

I'm still not sure if this was a strong piece to put in my personal section... it's not very creative and it was referenced from life. Plus, there's already a rotational section in the portfolio, but I ran out of time. If I were you, I would definitely do a walking animation of a new OC... something a little more creative!

           Sketchbook

Flipthrough Video

Last but not least was my sketchbook! It's the second smallest (I believe) moleskine. I filled it in from Nov-Feb although I still found myself rushing to get a few pages completed before handing it in... lesson learned. It fit nicely in the portfolio sleeve but I recommend getting a big binder clip to secure it. Since this is Sheridan's first time accepting a whole sketchbook, I looked through some Calart ones to give me an idea on what to put in there!

The End! That's all for my portfolio, thanks so much for looking! I'll be updating any results here. Crossing my fingers for good news at the end of this month and goodluck to any of you applying this year as well!
I'm always open to meeting and talking to new people, so feel free to contact me through instagram @kenimn. There's also a discord of Sheridan Hopefuls, so also add me there @kenimn and I'll be happy to invite you!

  2. Congratulations ! And I have one question , in the obvervational life drawing do you need to finish the drawing under the given time limit and it's compulsory to draw seeing an actual model/person or can I draw it from my imagination or seeing a picture ?
